Colonial Secretary (1907); Secretary for Interior during the Satyagraha in South Africa; after studying Law in London returned to Cape Town in 1895; supported Cecil Rhodes for some time but after JamesonΓÇÖs misadventure in the Transvaal felt disillusioned with him; his Law Practice had not picked up when he moved to Johannesburg and then to Pretoria; was only 28 when as State Attorney he found himself the right hand man of President Paul Krugar.
